The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $1,189 penalty to the City of North Powder for failing to properly monitor wastewater disinfection at the Union County community’s wastewater treatment plant for ten days in November and December 2008. Failure to collect samples using wastewater sampling equipment in order to evaluate the operation of wastewater disinfection equipment is a violation of Oregon environmental law. Improperly monitored discharges can pose a risk to aquatic species and their habitat and may affect the safety of public waters for public use.
