Many of the phosphates in a specific area are complexed into organic compounds or bound into plant and animal tissues. Orthophosphate tests measure what portion of a given phosphate is readily available to plants and animals in a specific area. It is often referred to as 'inorganic' or 'reactive' phosphate.
